Councilman at Large Chuck Hughes Enters Race For Mayor

Gary, IN - On Wednesday, October 11, 2006, Charles (Chuck) Hughes who has served as Councilman-at-large in Gary for over 15 years announced that he will run for Mayor of the City of Gary.

Making the announcement from his newly established headquarters located at 1219 Broadway, he is surrounded by enthusiastic supporters who believe Hughes is the heir apparent for the job. Hughes himself is determined to bring about a "Rebirth" of the city of his birth‹which is his campaign theme. Hughes explains, "For years I have watched and fought what I consider to be inept leadership taking our city in a direction opposite of where it should go. I look forward to returning Gary to the city it once was, where its citizens have a deserving pride in all it stands for."

Joined by his wife, Dr. Danita Johnson Hughes, President and CEO of Gary¹s Edgewater Systems, Hughes expressed his desire to bring strong, effective leadership back to the citizens of Gary. Leadership without compromise, but with commitment, caring and capable resources is what Hughes promises to provide.

Issues that are close to his heart primarily consist of the need to truly develop the city¹s workforce. "We need to tap into the best of our human resources, cultivate them, and provide motivation to get the best out of our people." Hughes goes on to say, "To lift the image of Gary will require a lift in the self-image of the people of Gary." Closely tied to the goal of workforce development is also the city¹s economic development. "There¹s a great deal we can do to bring businesses here that will employ our people, and there¹s much we can do to support the businesses that are already here, to help them maintain as viable options for employment and training."

Public Safety, improving the system of taxation, evaluating services to Seniors, and becoming more involved in the education of our children are also at the top of Hughes¹ campaign platform list.

Chuck Hughes, Councilman-at-large for the Gary City Council believes that history and destiny are on his side, and that nothing will side-track his plans of becoming the next Mayor of the City of Gary. He plans to initiate a REBIRTH of the city for the people of the city, which he refers to as "our great community."
